The orignal, now rejected, Burgess Street entry of the proposed Bicheno Ambulance Station.
From page 1
The Bicheno community raised concerns about the ambulance station being
built in prime retail space .
Last year, the Glamorgan Spring Bay
Council agreed to the development application reluctantly as it feared if it was to
refuse the application – which is within
state planning rules – it would result in
delays and potential expensive legal costs.
Glamorgan Spring Bay Deputy Mayor
Michael Symons said during the council
meeting at the time, the site chosen by
the department was in his opinion “a poor
choice=.
“I think that’s backed up by the comments we are getting from the community and it’s also a position that’s
supported by the council as well.=
Bicheno Investments, owners of the
site at 60A Burgess Street which was
originally set to be the site for the new
station said last year “we continue to
be disappointed by the department of
Health9s in昀exibility and unwillingness
to take into account the pressing housing and tourism needs in this precious
coastal town.=
“The [Health Department] current
proposal would rip the heart out of this
small-town precinct,= they said.
“The disregard of broader community issues is of concern to the wider
community and inadequately addressed
in their community engagement report
released today.=
The Department compulsorily acquired
the site in question in Burgess Street.
Comeback for
chilly challenge
Working Dog 20kg
THE East Coast Winter Challenge will make a comeback
after a four-year Covid-induced
hiatus.
The multi-sport event will be
held at Orford in August.
Co-director Tim Harmsen
said the challenge was last held
in 2019.
“The 2024 event has a new
team and the Winter Challenge
is again set to attract runners,
paddlers and bikers from across
Tasmania and interstate,” Mr
Harmsen said.
“The Winter Challenge is so
unique in that it gives something people to train for and
look forward to all through the
Tasmanian winter.
“For multisport competitors,
of which Tasmania has thousands, it gives people a good
excuse to get off the couch
through winter and train for
the August event.=
Mr Harmsen said the Winter
Challenge had a new format in
2024, the 昀rst time it has been
run as a two-day event.
“Day One consists of a hill
climb challenge that is open
to both cyclists and runners
and has equal prize money for
men and women in each of the
categories.
“The Day Two multisport
challenge begins with a kayak
in Prosser Bay, followed by a
road bike along Rheban Road,
mountain bike on private property and 昀nishing with a trail
run along to Spring Beach - all
as a relay-styled race.
“The multisport event can be
completed as an individual, a
pair or team of three or four.=
The event is on August 17-18.
