GREAT autumn weather continues to give
anglers plenty of opportunities, although
rain and showers are forecast this week.
The seasons are starting to change, with
less predictable weather and the slow loss
of heat and daylight – about one to three
minutes each day.
Remember to make the most of daylight saving before it 昀椀nishes on Easter
Sunday, April 5.
The 2025-26 Inland Fisheries Service tagged trout promotion started well,
but it has been a quiet few months until
Launceston-based angler Wayne Collins
changed that at Curries River Reservoir
last week.
Fishing in good conditions with his sister-in-law, Lonnie, on their 昀椀rst trip to
the reservoir, Wayne was trolling an oldschool Brown Bomber lure from his tinny,
powered by an electric motor, when the
rod suddenly buckled over. After a solid
昀椀ght he landed a rainbow trout – with a
surprise hiding in plain sight.
Wayne, a keen catch-and-release angler,
did not notice the yellow tag at 昀椀rst and
only planned to keep the 昀椀sh to give to his
daughter. It wasn’t until he got home that
he spotted the tag and contacted the Inland
Fisheries Service, where it was con昀椀rmed
he had won $5000 cash – money he says
will be spent on more 昀椀shing gear.
There is not long left in the season and
there are still 27 tagged trout swimming
in waters across Tasmania waiting to be
caught. Anglers are reminded the 昀椀rst
tagged trout taken from Great Lake this
season is worth $25,000, with all others
from the lake valued at $5000 each.
Congratulations also go to Katie Russell and Bryce Kube, who recently had
Wayne Collins with his $5000 tagged rainbow trout.
Tasmanian Game Fishing Association
records con昀椀rmed.
Katie now of昀椀cially holds the female
state record for the heaviest Southern Blue昀椀n Tuna in the 24kg line class after landing an 89.40kg 昀椀sh at Pedra Branca on
November 16, 2025.
Bryce is also a new state record holder
in the small fry male category after landing
an 80.20kg mako shark on 10kg line at St
Helens on January 3, 2026.
The Southern Game Fish Club hosted
the East Coast Classic off Southport last
weekend, with a large 昀氀eet 昀椀shing in excellent conditions. Results were not available
at the time of writing, but keep an eye out
for them in future reports.
The Sport昀椀shing Club of Tasmania will
host the Tasmanian Broadbill Sword昀椀sh
Championships at Eaglehawk Neck from
Saturday, March 28, through to Saturday,
April 4. Teams can 昀椀sh a maximum of 昀椀ve
days, from 7am to 4pm, with weigh-ins
held daily from 5pm to 6pm. With several sword昀椀sh over 200kg reported last
weekend, the event is shaping up to be a
productive one.
Tip of the Week — A broadbill sword昀椀sh has its own built-in heating system for
the brain and eyes. This allows the 昀椀sh to
maintain function in very cold water at
depth, helping it hunt and survive in conditions that would affect most other species.

Tight lines until next week.
