Etiquette, the key to
good day’s angling
Peter Simmons with two
quality snapper caught

North East Tasmania.
FISHING
with ADAM RICE
FISHING etiquette is something I have written about
before, yet it continues to
dominate conversation within
angling circles.
If you are not familiar
with the term, etiquette is an
unwritten code of conduct built
around respect rather than hardand-fast rules. In some situations, the two overlap – just as
failing to give way on the road
or the golf course is unlikely
to end well.
It is worth revisiting a few
of the codes of conduct most
anglers appreciate others
learning, understanding and
practising.
Freshwater rivers and lakes
can attract large numbers of
people, particularly during peak
periods. The best approach is
to deal with it calmly and
respectfully. If there are several anglers on the shore, have
a chat about how the 昀椀shing
is going and which direction
people intend to 昀椀sh. Communication avoids con昀氀ict.
If you would like to 昀椀sh a
spot and someone is already
there, ask 昀椀rst. Do not simply
make yourself at home – even
if it happens to be your favourite location. If an area feels
overcrowded and you prefer
solitude, move on and find
somewhere quieter.
At boat ramps, preparation is
key. Have your gear organised
and ready away from the ramp
before launching. Do not block
others while sorting equipment
on the trailer. Likewise, when
retrieving your boat, be ef昀椀cient and aware of those waiting. Courtesy and organisation
make life easier for everyone.
On both shore and boat,
avoid cutting in ahead of
anglers already working a
stretch of water. Respect their
right of way. Observe speed
limits in boats and be mindful of wake, which can churn
up shallow areas and send
waves over people 昀椀shing or
swimming.
Respect 昀椀sh, bag and size
limits – they are set for a reason. You do not always need to
keep a full limit.
Avoid camping or lighting
昀椀res where it is not permitted,
take all rubbish home (and
more if possible), and leave
gates and access points exactly
as you found them. Positive
relationships with landowners are vital, and misuse can
threaten future access.
IN saltwater, snapper is high
on many priority lists. Some
anglers are 昀椀nding quality 昀椀sh,
while others are working harder
for results. A 1–5kg snapper
is a 昀椀ne Tasmanian capture,
although like trout, they are
capable of exceeding 10kg.
Focus on structure and
reef bottom. If you encounter smaller snapper, be patient
and consider presenting a larger
fresh bait – live or dead. Big
昀椀sh are often drawn to bigger
offerings. With a steady berley trail, you never know what
might turn up, including the
occasional mako shark, which
remain plentiful.
With sand 昀氀athead restrictions on the horizon, many
anglers have been targeting
alternative species. Good bags
of tiger, or king, 昀氀athead have
been reported.
The IFISH crew have also
been in Tasmania recently
and reportedly landed striped
marlin, sword昀椀sh and yellow昀椀n tuna in a single day – an
achievement sure to feature in
a future episode.
Tip of the Week: An esky
full of ice not only keeps your
catch, food and drinks fresh, but
can also help manage swelling
in the event of minor injuries.
